Beautycounter or Bust? Why a forced exit was just what I needed

As you probably know by now, the answer is bust…but here’s what I’ve discovered over the past six months…

Six months ago, I was forced out of my comfort zone overnight when Beautycounter’s CEO announced that the company was no longer. This forced exit from Beautycounter; a brand I’d relied on for clean beauty products, a supportive community, and an income for almost a decade, felt daunting. It had been an exciting journey—Beautycounter’s disruptive approach in the clean beauty industry was refreshing, and their commitment to transparency was something I admired deeply. But sometimes, stepping back helps us see the bigger picture.

As I’ve spent the last six months searching for alternatives, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find so many brands that are doing amazing things in the clean beauty space. I am also proud to say that I found a company whose business model and product offering not only compliments my desire to eventually continue sharing Beautycounter, but also something that fits my life’s direction perfectly. That being said, I still have not found any other company out there that is doing ALL the things Beautycounter was, so while I have found my way in this “un”comfortable zone, I am looking forward to seeing what the new version of the uniquely disruptive brand will look like.

Beautycounter, with its fresh, bold approach, carved out a unique space in the clean beauty industry. As brand advocates, we raised awareness about EWG (Environmental Working Group) certification, heavy metal screening, sustainable sourcing, and the lack of regulation of ingredients in personal care and beauty products. This refreshing commitment spoke to me and my values and I am forever grateful that it held so much space in my life for as long as it did. But, when a forced exit from what had become my comfort zone presented itself, it wasn’t as scary as it first appeared.

Not only have I enjoyed learning about new areas in the healthy, “low-tox” living space, this journey opened my eyes to the power of multiple income streams. We never know when circumstances will push us to pivot, so diversifying income is not just wise—it’s empowering. I didn’t have to walk away from my passion for clean beauty; I just had to find the right brand that aligned with my evolving goals but still held true to my values. And along came Shaklee.

Shaklee not only offers EWG-certified products, but also follows rigorous standards in heavy metal screening, much like Beautycounter. Yet, Shaklee’s legacy goes much deeper. Founded over 65 years ago, it has proven its commitment to wellness, environmental responsibility, and product safety long before these concepts became popular. This stability brings a sense of trust and confidence. Whereas Beautycounter brought a fresh, disruptive energy, Shaklee feels like a steady foundation, offering tried-and-true products that are continuously improved upon.

In the end, Beautycounter’s “bust” was really a gift. It led me to Shaklee—a brand that’s both similar and refreshingly different. As I move along this path of holistic wellness and low-tox living, I am excited to continue sharing the things I love as I continue helping you be the best version of yourself.
