How to build a business you love based on your priorities

March is a BIG month around here. Not only is it the month we completed our family of 5 as we welcomed our little girl into our lives, but it's also the month that Beautycounter was born, the month the brand expanded into Canada in 2016, and the month I started my career as a brand advocate.

Beautycounter's mission is to "get safer products into the hands of everyone."

I'll be honest, it was not the #1 reason I joined the brand. My main goal, 7 years ago, was to save myself time, energy, and effort in getting safer products into my home to use on my young family.

BUT, when I realized just how much I didn't know, I was SO incredible grateful that Beautycounter gave me the opportunity to use my voice to help create change in a largely under-regulated industry.

What I learned since joining Beautycounter:

  • I didn't know that Canada only has a 600 ingredient "hot list" of ingredients that they recommend not be used in personal care products or that at the time, the US only banned 38.

  • I didn't know that when a company used the word "fragrance" on their ingredient list that they could hide hundreds of ingredients in a product.

  • I didn't know that when a product said "organic" or "natural" that this didn't actually mean there was anything safer about it.

  • And most of all, I didn't know that there were ingredients in the products I was rubbing all over my babies' body's every single day that were known carcinogens, hormone disruptors, and irritants.

And now...what started as getting safer products into my home has been a seven year journey of getting as many safer products as possible into the hands of as many people as possible.

What I have accomplished since working with Beautycounter:

  • Educating my friends and family about ingredient safety

  • Meeting with government officials to raise awareness around this topic and to advocate for more health protective laws

  • Helping friends of friends and friends of their friends and so on and so on use safer products on their loved ones.

  • Recruiting other women to become brand advocates to share this important mission too

  • Leading women to grow empowered businesses that use commerce as an engine to create more goodness in the world

  • Showing my family that you can be a present mom, wife, friend, sister, and daughter while also achieving your own dreams and helping the world become a safer place

Beautycounter's mission of getting safer products into the hands of everyone was born in 2013 and will continue to grow in the years to come. I am beyond proud of my partnership with the brand and know that my seven journey alongside it is only the beginning. The best is yet to come!

What started as a way to get safer products into my home that were delivered on my doorstep, turned into an income opportunity and confidence boost that I never expected. I didn't know what I didn't know, I didn't realize what I was lacking from my busy mom life, and I was floored by how much I loved my new role as a brand advocate with Beautycounter.

The problem? I had no idea how to run a business, I had very small pockets of time during hopeful naps, car rides, and a few hours after the kids' bedtime and I was exhausted on a good day (not to mention the worst salesperson in my previous life as a cosmetic dermatology nurse).

For years I ran my business on adrenaline, spur of the moment ideas, and pockets of time and it worked...for a while. Unfortunately, while this method worked, it wasn't sustainable and I knew it was time to bring in reinforcements to help my business not only run smoothly, but to grow sustainably.

When I hired my virtual assistant, I sent her a word document titled "ALL THE THINGS". It was a brain dump of EVERYTHING I was doing in my business; and no, this did NOT include "all the things" I was trying to keep up with on a daily basis for myself and my family. Insert chaos, overwhelm, and never feeling like I could get ahead.

As a busy mom who also juggles work (or is contemplating returning to work), you likely have a lot on your plate. Juggling work and home life can be a challenge, but there are strategies that can help. One approach that can be particularly effective that I've learned over the past few years is priority-centered planning and time blocking.

Here are some steps to follow to help you gain control, have peace of mind, and to bring the joy back into your daily or weekly routine:

Identify your priorities:

Start by determining where your values lie. Common values tend to be health, kids, spouse, work, volunteering, friendships, faith, etc. Once you know your values, you can design your week how YOU want it to look.

Schedule your priorities first:

Block off time in your calendar to focus on those top priorities. This ensures that you have time set aside to focus on the most important values.

Plan around your priorities:

Once you've scheduled your priorities, plan the rest of your day or week around those tasks. For example, if you've blocked off time each day to work out for 30 minutes, you can plan other tasks, such as checking email or doing household chores, around those blocks of time.

Be realistic:

It's important to be realistic when scheduling your time. Don't try to cram too many tasks into one day or week, or you'll end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Be sure to leave some margin in your schedule for unexpected tasks or emergencies.

Evaluate your schedule regularly:

Take some time to evaluate your schedule regularly to see what's working and what's not. Are there tasks that you're consistently neglecting? Do you need to adjust the amount of time you're spending on certain tasks? By regularly evaluating your schedule, you can make adjustments and ensure that you're using your time in the most effective way possible.

By using priority-centered planning and time blocking, you can better manage your workload and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Don't forget to take care of yourself and ask for help when you need it. With a little planning and support, you can achieve your lifestyle goals while finding joy in working and quality time with your family.
