Do you know your skin type?

Your skin is your LARGEST ORGAN! It is so important to know what your skin type is! Some of it's very important functions include, but are not limited to protection, absorption, excretion, and thermoregulation.

Your basic skincare needs are impacted by the type of skin you have. The 5 main Skin Types include Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination, and Sensitive skin. Skin conditions, on the other hand, can refer to temporary conditions of the body and can coincide with any skin type. Skin Conditions include, but are not limited to Aging/Wrinkles, Acne, Hyperpigmentation, Redness/Rosacea, and Dehydration/Eczema.

Characteristics of Skin Types:

  • Consistent

  • Do not change often

  • Typically impacted by factors out of our control such as age and genetics

Characteristics of Skin Conditions:

  • May come and go

  • Will coincide with a skin type

  • Are typically impacted by other factors such as nutrition, hydration, exercise, hormones, products used, and environmental stressors.

KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

Your skin type is the "type" of skin you have. It is determined by genetics, age, hormone fluctuations, your environment, and the climate in the area in which you live. Our skin type is for the most part, out of our control, but can be supported by a healthy lifestyle and using products that are best suited for it. Your skin type may change over time due to things such as environmental factors, age, hormones and some health-related issues, but often stays consistent.

The 5 Main Skin Types are:

  1. Normal: Not too oily, not too dry. Very few concerns.

  2. Dry: Tight feeling, rough texture, and dull appearance. May be characterized by peeling, redness, and itchiness.

  3. Oily: Appears shiny, feels smooth, and has visible oil deposits. May be characterized be acne.

  4. Combination: Both dry and oily. Oil deposits located in the "T-zone"; forehead, nose, and chin and may be characterized by acne and/or peeling and irritation.

  5. Sensitive: Fragile skin that may feel hot and irritated or itchy, appear red, and react easily to internal and external factors.

How to determine your skin type:

Questions to ask yourself and/or others:

  1. Where do you find oil deposits over the course of your day? (none, T zone, All over)

  2. When you touch the surface of your skin, how does it feel? (rough, smooth, hot)

  3. When you look at your skin, how does it look? (glowing, dull, red, inflamed)

Utilize this Skin Type Quiz to help determine yours!

Start with a REGIMEN to support your Skin TYPE

One of the best ways you can support your skin type is through a basic, four step skincare regimen (1. Cleanse 2. Prep 3. Treat 4. Protect). Additional products or treatments may also be helpful and are discussed below.

Cleanse your skin:

Cleansing and thoroughly removing dirt, makeup, oil and other residue is essential to having optimal skin.

Prep your skin for treatment:

Toners and essences help prep your complexion for maximum product absorption.

Treat your skin and target your concerns:

Deliver concentrated doses of ingredients to address your skin concerns

Protect your skin and seal the deal:

This help lock in actives, rehydrate skin, maintain optimal hydration and stengthens your skins barrier

I suggest adding in these BOOSTERS for common Skin CONDITIONS such as acne, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, etc.

  2. Mechanical: Beautycounter's Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser

  3. Chemical + Mechanical: Beautycounter's Charcoal Facial Mask

Hydration: Serums, Oils, Balms

a) Dry Skin Type: your skin may want ALL the things. Essence + HA serums + oil + cream.

Trisha's Recommendations:

1) Beautycounter's Countertime Hydrating Mineral Essence (am+pm)

2) Beautycounter's Countertime OR Countermatch Serum (am+pm)

3) Beautycounter's Facial Oil (at least once a day. Added to your serum or applied on it's own AFTER serum)

4) Beautycounter's Countertime OR Countermatch Day & Night Creams (am+pm)

b) Combination Skin Type: a combination of toner, essence, serums, oil, and cream. Instead of twice a day or every day, your skin may only need these things once in a while. Pay CLOSE attention to the zones of your face: forehead, nose, cheeks, chin. Are they oily mid-way through the day? Are there patches that appear dry?
