WHAT'S THE SCOOP WITH BEAUTYCOUNTER?

Beautycounter is temporarily closed. Here's what happened and an answer to the most-burning question: “Is Beautycounter coming back?”

Last week, Beautycounter Brand Advocates (Consultants) found out that the Beautycounter we have known over the past 11 years, is no longer. I have loved and used these products on myself and my family for years, so this news was tough to hear (as I'm sure it was for you too!). It was a shock to me, to our clean beauty community, and even to the founder and CEO, Gregg Renfrew.

This is what you’ll see when you head to beautycounter.com right now.

WHAT HAPPENED WITH BEAUTYCOUNTER?

In 2021, Beautycounter was purchased by a private equity firm called the Carlyle Group, and a few months later, Gregg Renfrew (the original founder and CEO) was asked to step down. While the product safety standards were upheld, new products were launched, and even a new product category was introduced, since that sale in 2021, Beautycounter faced challenges that it was unable to recover from.

What I know as of May 1st, is that the parent company of Beautycounter, Counterbrands LLC, was foreclosed on and Gregg Renfrew was given the opportunity to purchase certain assets from Beautycounter. Because of the foreclosure and the money owed to vendors, Gregg made the hard decision (which she shared tearfully with us) that it would be smarter for them to pause operations and comb through every process and take time for her and her new team to regain control over the products that are sitting in warehouses, rebuild relationships with suppliers and manufacturers, and come up with a business opportunity that is appealing to the loyal brand advocates who may be looking to return; and through it all she remains optimistic and more determined than ever.

WHEN IS BEAUTYCOUNTER COMING BACK?

We have been told directly from Gregg that Beautycounter’s business operations are on pause until at least Q4 of 2024, but she has every intention of bringing the company back – and even better than ever.

Gregg and her team are working diligently to rebuild the tech, processes, and platforms that will allow Beautycounter to return with the same safe, high performing formulations, beautiful packaging, and meaningful company name.

I’m hopeful the new Beautycounter will launch later this year and have been told it will be driven by mission; just like it always has been. Originally we were told everything was paused as it was, but because of the foreclosure, it will all be starting from scratch with a new compensation plan, structure, and maybe even some new product lines. Gregg has said she hopes to bring back the consultant community in a new 2.0 version and because I have full trust in Gregg, I look forward to what the future holds and I have every intention of continuing my journey with Beautycounter when it resumes.

CAN I STILL PURCHASE BEAUTYCOUNTER PRODUCTS?

From now until the projected relaunch, all Beautycounter business operations are on pause. This unfortunately means that orders cannot be placed through the Beautycounter website for the foreseeable future. Of course this is tough to navigate as I know you love and rely on Beautycounter’s products in your everyday routine! (I’m right there with you.) I wish I could say I had inventory to share with you, but alas, I do not. (one of the many perks of this type of business, right?!) If you live in the US and have an Ulta store nearby, you can still enjoy the stock that remains on their shelves. Their online inventory is very limited, but there are a few products you can grab. Here in Canada, unfortunately, we are out of luck unless we can find a good friend, neighbor, or contact who is willing to part with their treasured products :(

I’M A LOYAL BEAUTYCOUNTER CLIENT, WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

Other brands: Like for you, Beautycounter has been my “easy button” for skincare and makeup. I have been and will continue looking for alternatives to tide me over during the next few months as I run out of my faves. I am doing some homework on my end and looking into alternative skincare and makeup brands that also meet high safety AND performance standards. And if you’re not on my beauty email list, you can add your email here to stay up to date on all things clean beauty and low-tox living.

I have always loved that Beautycounter was a one-stop-shop for me because I highly value it's simplicity. I have received a lot of questions about the “next best recommendations” and while I honestly haven't tried many other brands, the following brands are considered "clean" and are worth a try (in my opinion). {Soon to be affiliate links via https://www.thedetoxmarket.ca/.}

True Botanicals (Canada and USA)

Tata Harper (Canada and USA)

SUmmer Fridays (USA only)

Lawless (USA only)

Ilia (Canada and USA)

I'M A BEAUTYCOUNTER BRAND ADVOCATE, NOW WHAT?

First and foremost, I want to thank you! For your contribution to the clean beauty movement and for your role in educating about ingredient safety, advocating for more health protective laws, and getting safer products into the hands of everyone. What a true honour is has been to work alongside you.

Over this past week, I have spent time processing the loss of the amazing Beautycounter brand we grew together. With that comes feelings of sadness and frustration, but also feeling hopeful and optimistic about the next chapter of Beautycounter to come. I will absolutely be there for it and in the meantime, I feel a responsibility to help you if you are looking to find a safe space to land that aligns with your values and can potentially offer an opportunity to earn an income if you need or want it.

Should you want to learn more about an interim opportunity or want to hear updates from me regarding the future of the Beautycounter brand advocate opportunity, please let me know by clicking here or emailing trishaconradcorp@gmail.com.

It is my desire, always, to do everything in my power to act with the most thoughtful, ethical, honest, and servant leader values.

MY THOUGHTS

Over the years my Beautycounter business has brought me so much more than the safer products I was looking for and an income I was so fortunate to receive. It allowed me to share education on ingredient safety, to advocate for more health protective laws in both Canada and the US, and to share ways in which I am trying to live my healthies life. But above all of this, are the relationships I have had the opportunity to grow because of our shared values. The Beautycounter community is like no other I have ever experienced and for that I am eternally grateful.

I have never felt so proud of the work I've done and to work alongside a B Corporation that was advocating for change in the beauty industry at large was humbling. I am so proud of the huge steps Beautycounter took to improve legislation in the highly unregulated beauty industry and look forward to continuing our efforts in the near future.
